Free Sample Edits
In the Author Questionnaire Form, you will send over the first two chapters of your manuscript. I’ll do a free sample edit on any 1,500-words within that section. Then, I’ll send my feedback with your sample edit within 5 to 10 days. However, only manuscripts I resonate with and are ready for your chosen service will receive a proposal in their quote.
You Decide If You Want to Hire Me
Next, you’ll determine if my sample edit and quote mesh with your expectations of a developmental editor and your financial situation. If you’re still undecided, you can always come back when you’re ready.
Review & Sign Contract
If you decide to hire me as your editor, I’ll send a contract detailing the scope of work, scheduling, specified deliverables, and a disclosure and confidentiality clause. I also include an AI clause that explicitly states I never use any type of AI for any of my editing or coaching services. To ensure full transparency, you must review the entire contract. It can allow you time to create any changes before signing.
Secure Your Spot with a Deposit
After receiving your signed contract, you can officially secure your spot in my schedule by sending a 30% non-refundable deposit.
Editing
I’ll start on the specified editing or coaching service. The expected turnaround time can vary by service and complexity of the project.
Receive Deliverables
After I finish editing, you will pay the remaining balance. Then, I will send all the deliverables.
Limited Complimentary Email Support
During your revision process, you’ll receive limited complimentary email support. Those who opt for the developmental editing services will receive more hourly support than the manuscript evaluations. This is when you can ask questions, clear up confusion, and receive guidance during the overwhelming revision process.

Previous clients who recommend an author to my developmental editing or manuscript evaluation services can receive a 15% referral rate on a future project when they turn into a booked client.
Cut Scope of Work
Focusing on one or more specific big-picture elements can significantly decrease the price of a developmental edit or manuscript evaluation.
Payment Installment Plans
You’ll receive customized payment installment plan options for each project. Hiring an affordable editor without compromising high-quality work can mean finding one who utilizes a unique and affordable payment plan.
FAQs
-
Have you finished at least your second draft on your completed manuscript?
Have you had a few beta readers/sensitivity readers read your manuscript?
If you’ve said yes to both of these questions, it could be a perfect time to hire a developmental editor.
-
Hiring a developmental editor can help you identify big-picture issues, such as plot, structure, characterization, scene dynamics (unrealistic dialogue), pacing, logic/believability, genre conventions, world-building/setting, and more. While manuscript evaluations merely identify issues, developmental editing is more comprehensive, because it involves providing potential solutions that can help you brainstorm how to fix them during the revision process.
For example, beta or alpha readers might help you identify characterization issues. They might say the main character doesn't have agency.
However, a developmental editor would thoroughly analyze the manuscript and suggest one or more ways to help the character gain more agency.
Developmental editors (like me) might even offer book maps if you have structure or plot issues.
-
Developmental editors help authors identify big-picture issues and offer possible solutions.
-
Hiring a developmental editor can be ideal after you’ve self-edited your manuscript as best as you can before you start line editing and copy editing. This means you’ll save money before you invest significant money in line editing and copy editing.
They can help you figure out which areas in your manuscript to expand on, which can help you reach your word count goals.
They can help you improve your work by providing special guidance and resources. This can help writers with revisions and future projects.
Your manuscript might have inconsistencies. A developmental editor can help identify them, which can help improve the reader experience.

Helps you determine if your story resonates with the editor. An editor specializing in your genre will be more familiar with the genre conventions. They might also be more engaged in your story.
For instance, if you're writing dark romance, consider hiring an editor specializing in it. A dark romance editor is more likely to resonate and empathize with your story.
If they don’t specialize in the genre you’re writing, their feedback might reflect that. You could risk hiring a fiction editor who doesn’t understand what you’re trying to accomplish.Helps you determine if the editor’s communication style meshes with you.
Helps you analyze the editor’s expertise.
